Use for my Blog
I teach High School Science, Math and Physical Education. Right now I actually have an immediate use for a blog that I am going to try as this class progresses. My students seem to be having a hard time understanding the content in my Physics class, so I have created a blog for them to chat with me and each other to promote discussion about Physics. The plan would be that they visit this blog when they are frustrated or confused about a topic from class and hope that the discussion that can occur from this will help them to understand the content necessary for them to be successful in my class. This would be a public forum in hopes that occasionally other people from the world my chime in to help them better understand what they are supposed to know. My hope would be that by discussing the topics with each other as well as anyone else who looks at this blog they will increase their physics comprehension.

I think that is a great idea. I know that at my current school it is hard for the students to be able to stay after school for extra work sessions with their teachers. This would give the students the opportunity if they have internet access at home to find some answers to questions that they may have.
ReplyDeleteI think it is really a great idea to have the community involved. This might just encourage your students to keep studying physics. My question is how are you going to get these professionals to follow your class blog? The best suggestion I have is to invite them. You can either email or visit local business or colleges. Through your communication simply state what the blog is for, and how their insight could play a vital role with the students. Let me know how this works out. I might implement the community part in my blog next year.

What an excellent idea! Some students may be more comfortable participating in an online forum than in class, and the blog could certainly give those students the opportunity to ask questions. Also, the blog is a fantastic idea for students who may have a difficult time processing information. It is possible that students may not know exactly what questions to ask but once they have processed the information they have several questions and/or frustrations that need to be addressed. I really think your blog would be much appreciated by students and parents of frustrated or confused students.
ReplyDeleteOne of the major attractions for teachers to using blogging is that its focus is not necessarily on the content of the blog but more on the process of constructing and evaluating knowledge helping us reach the sometimes illusive upper levels – analyzing, evaluating, and creating – of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Using a blog in the classroom is of great benefit to our students if they have the proper access to get to the site to be able to communicate with their peers. The idea that you have to open this up to others to be able to communicate is a great idea. As educators we do not have all of the answers at times and it would of great benefit to your students for them to have the opportunity to communicate with experts from your field. As you work your way through the process you will come up with a system of organization and what works for you and your students.
